Marilyn Henrion The Ninth Decade

Marilyn Henrion: The Ninth Decade

The Ninth Decade features selected works by Marilyn Henrion created during the artist’s nineties. This exhibition honors the enduring creativity and vision of an artist who continues to innovate and explore new artistic boundaries well into her tenth decade of life. Marilyn Henrion was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1932 and is a distinguished graduate of Cooper Union. Having been a longtime resident of Greenwich Village, she relocated to Texas in 2022 at the age of ninety.

Since then, she has maintained a prolific output that combines photography, digital technology, and the traditional craft of hand quilting. Her mixed media artworks demonstrate a distinctive fusion of urban geometry, natural forms, and architectural elements that explore the dynamic relationship between humanity and its environment.

The exhibition features selected pieces created over the four years following Henrion’s ninetieth birthday. Her work reflects a deep engagement with place, merging the past and present as well as the man-made and natural worlds. Henrion describes her art as expressing “the eternal yearning for immortality,” capturing the human imprint etched into the landscape.

Henrion will give an Artist’s Talk on Saturday, July 25, from 1-3 p.m., offering insights into her creative process and the themes present in this late chapter of her work. As an exciting bonus you will also learn about the documentary film about Marilyn and her late husband (fellow artist Edward Henrion) that is currently in production. The filmmaker will be present to tell you more!

Henrion’s artwork is included in major museum, corporate, and private collections worldwide and is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art. Her innovative combination of photography and hand quilting revitalizes mixed media and provides a unique perspective on the evolving dialogue between age, creativity, and sense of place. The exhibition runs July 18-August 15. The Art Gallery at the Lewisville Grand Theater is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and during public events. Exhibitions are always free to visit.
